Abstract

Our article focuses on the publication of the anthology The Elsewhere of Words and Other Poems in Greek, which brings together a selection of poems by Anise Koltz, collected and translated by Maria Papadima (Stéréoma, 2022). We will examine the translational challenges subtly concealed within a poetic writing style that appears devoid of any complexity in terms of meaning or wording: the chosen translation approach is marked by its directness and near-literalness which, nonetheless, give rise to new issues. We will analyze the translation strategy, based on a deliberately pared-down linguistic precision, which succeeds in rendering the recurrent words and concepts that permeate Koltz’s poems, as well as the persistent images and motifs that run through her entire poetic work.
