Abstract
In his literary texts K.J. Erben was very much influenced by the folk models he was familiar with. The problem of a child’s dependence on the mother provoked his personal interests, as a result of which a number of texts appeared, such as “The Orphan’s Bed” (1837), “Guardian Angel” (1840), “Boiling Tar” (1834), as well as those in the “Bouquet” cycle: “Treasure” (1838), “The Noonday Witch” (1840), “The Daughter’s Curse” (1852), “The Water Goblin” (1853), “Willow” (1853), “Lily” (1861). The encounter between the innocent child and the unfamiliar world is interpreted in the 1834 literary translation “The King of Spirits” based on Goethe’s ballad “Elf King” (1782).
Key words: the folk image of the child, literary translation and interpretation
