Abstract

A subject of this study is the usage of indirect negative constructions in Bulgarian language and their translated English equivalents. The empirical ground for the study is the classical work „Бай Ганьо“ and its most recent English translation from 2010. Different ways of expressing indirect negation in the Bulgarian text have been systematized in the process of work and attention to their translated analogues has been paid. A conclusion that has been reached is that despite the typological distinctions between the two languages, in some of the examples there could be seen complete analogy, while other examples show structural and semantic asymmetry.

Key words: negation, indirect negative constructions, rhetorical questions
