Abstract
This paper discusses the results of an informal survey of student opinions on the use of AI tools in assessment and the approaches that can be adopted to ensure academic integrity, fairness and validity of assessments. The results of the survey challenge generalised assumptions of students being keen AI users or unanimously viewing detection and penalisation of AI in assessment in a negative way. Instead, it reveals divided views on the usefulness, effectiveness and ethics of AI in education, highlighting the connection between choices of using AI tools and students’ broader ethical principles and motivation to learn.
Key words: AI in assessment; academic integrity; student perspectives
