Abstract
In the following study we direct our attention to the representations of the occult in the travel writing of Nicolas Bouvier, Le poisson-scorpion (The scorpion-fish). We explore how they alter his perception of reality in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). We analyze the sequences of magic events that happen in the book and how they affect the author and his everyday life. Our study is influenced by the works of Jean-Xavier Ridon and Gerard Gogez, both travel-writing literary critics from the 20th century.
Key words: travel writing, travel writers, 20th century, Bouvier, occultism, reality, perception, magic, Le poisson-scorpion, Ceylon
