Abstract
The paper offers an analysis of the first idyll, Thyrsis (Θύρσις ἢ ᾠδή), with regard to the functions of ekphrasis. The argument interprets the work as “metaidyll”, which shapes the topics and themes of the new genre developed by Theocritus. This new genre is discussed within the context of Hellenistic culture
as the first instance of European modernity.
Key words: Hellenistic period, Theocritus, idyll, ekphrasis, anti-mimesis, bucolic mode, κισσύβιον (rustic wooden drinking-cup)
