Abstract
This paper examines the English -ing participle in the syntactic function of an attribute and probes into the semantic relations it forms with its antecedent. The focus falls on the pattern <-ING Participle + Noun>, as it is namely the prepositive position that is expected to present the greatest semantic heterogeneity. The paper begins with a review and comparison of the participle forms in English
and Bulgarian, followed by a translation of a sample of noun phrases. The translation transformations are analysed for the purpose of identifying specific trends and patterns in the translation of the investigated constructions. The investigation of the selected sample established that the Bulgarian present active participle appears to be the most suitable translation equivalent of the English -ing participle; however, the latter exhibits significantly greater semantic versatility.
