Abstract

This study is an attempt at a semantic analysis of complex sentences expressing causal relations through a bilingual Italian-Bulgarian corpus. While comparing the original with the translation, differences are to be found affecting the overall meaning of the structure. These translation changes can be reduced to three main cases: omission of a causal conjunction in the translation from and into Italian; adding one in the translation, while it is absent in the original, replacing an original conditional conjunction with a causal one; reverse causation. The subject matter of this study casts additional light on the translation of complex causal sentences from and into Italian.

Key words: clauses of cause, semantics, conjunctions
