Abstract
This paper analyses the translation into Bulgarian of certain idioms in the novel Sidi by the Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte which pose challenges in some or in all steps of the phraseological translation: identifying the unit in the source text, interpreting its denotative and connotative meaning, reproducing the unit in the recipient language on the semantic and the discursive level. The main purpose of the study is to point out the necessity of a translator’s very good linguistic competence, the need in some cases of arduous search across different dictionaries and sources when phraseological translation is carried out,
combined with the creative ability to come closer to full transfer of the phraseological units.
