Abstract
Boccaccio’s Decameron established the short story as a genre by setting a model for further generations of writers. Many authors will follow his example and arrange the short stories in a narrative frame, others will distance themselves, but no one will ignore him in terms of style and eloquence. Some will excuse themselves for not writing like him, others will praise him, still others will make references to, or quote him outright, but for all after him for the next three centuries the Decameron will be an unquestionable role model in structure, themes, plots – a true source of inspiration.

Key words: short story, quotations, narrator, narrative frame
