Abstract
The question of the linguistic value of intonation is controversial. It is presented differently depending on the theoretical conception. This paper emphasizes the need to continue and extend the study of intonation in the Bulgarian language with a view to clarifying its functions, the ways in which its
components interact with each other and with the segmental language system to serve communicative purposes in the process of communication. To this end, the main studies on Bulgarian intonation are briefly presented and in the center lies the question of the importance of the chosen approach to its description. The advantages of the so-called syntactic approach are highlighted.
