Abstract

The focus of study is the possible word order combinations of various adverbial modifiers excerpted from the corpora of the Bulgarian oral speech. Attention is paid to the formal as well as to the information loaded word order. One of the main conclusions resulting from the study is the idea that in colloquial speech there is a tendency towards the formation of a word order model which includes two adverbial modifiers. The present study corroborates the leading role of the particular context and intonation as objective markers for the allocation of the various adverbial modifiers to one of the topic or focus categories.

Key words: word order, adverbial modifier, information structure, topic, focus
