Abstract
The paper studies the linguistic expressions and their material realisations in two Bulgarian towns – Tryavna and Veliko Tarnovo – both of them places of historical significance and popular tourist locations. The author seeks to identify the underlying patterns in the public inscriptions and to explore the relationship between language and other semiotic systems that build the uniqueness of the two towns. The research and the discussion are carried out within the framework of Linguistic Landscaping Studies (LLS) and include ethnographic observation and data collection. The analysis is made within the theory of ethnopoetics and geosemiotics (both of them approaches to the study of the linguistic landscapes).
Key words: linguistic landscape, public inscription, place, structure
