Abstract

The paper provides arguments for the three-grammeme interpretation of the category definiteness: indefiniteness in the Bulgarian language. It analyses the typically grammatical and stylistic means of the definite nominal forms – containing the morphemes –ът/ят, -та, -то, -те, and also these with a formant един. The paper also gives an explanation of their relationships to the indefinite nominal forms and the possibility of all to be considered as belonging to a common morphological category.

Key words: definiteness: indefiniteness, the definite article, the indefinite article, determinatives, reference, generic, concrete and abstract meaning
