Abstract
This text offers a short theoretical frame for the analysis of the fantastic in the works of Maupassant. It presents the understanding of the fantastic of the author himself – the way it is achieved, what it is, how it influences the reader. It uses basic principles of interpretation of the fantastic introduced and developed by Tzvetan Todorov as well. Its aim is to serve as a methodological introduction to the research of one particularly important image – the one of the invisible in the fantastic prose by Maupassant – through the prism of mimetic representation.
Key words: fantastic, supernatural, Maupassant, stories
