Abstract

The paper presents the problem of translating phraseology from the Czech language into Bulgarian and Serbian. We have looked for the functional equivalence of the phrases and idioms and illustrated it with examples from Karel Čapek´s work and its translations. The excerpted phrasems have been classified in the following groups: usage of identical phraseme both semantically and formally; translation with a phraseme, different in its structure and key components; translation without a phraseme; literal translation; inadequate translation of a Czech phrasal unit.

Key words: translation, phraseology, South Slavonic languages
