Abstract
We examine the terms main and subordinate clause with a view to defining and using them in teaching complex compound sentences. In the historical review, we found that grammar authors used the term main clause a priori. For the subordinate clause from the Revival period right up to L. Andreychin, the definitions are detailed and accurate. They explain all the important facts: it is subordinated to a word in the main clause, clarifies it, completes its meaning and is syntactically developed as a whole sentence. It is a disturbing fact that in the last 70 years some definitions of the subordinate clause have changed in the direction of blurring the relations of dominance and subordination.
Key words: main clause, subordinate clause, complex sentence
