Abstract

The following article is a modern review of the formation and development of the theory about the parts of speech in antiquity – from ancient India to the Hellenistic epoque. Special attention is paid to the representatives of the Alexandrian school of grammar – Aristarchus and Dionysius, who first offered a word classification based on scientific linguistics.
