Abstract

The article studies Bulgarian and Polish names of diseases and symptoms which are derivatives from adjectives or contain non-derived adjectives with the aim of comparing their formal and semantic structure. Borrowings from Latin are not included in the study. The formal analysis shows which derivational structures, formants and word genders are typical and most productive in both languages. The semantic analysis intends to group the terms by their profiles of meaning: appearance of the sick, morphological characteristics of disease like color, shape, structure, consistency of the pathological change, abstract nouns for qualities related to the ailing.
