Abstract
The aim of the present study is to conduct a survey regarding the reception of the Present Passive Participles by Bulgarian native speakers, analyse the results and examine the language attitudes towards the use of the deverbatives ending in -m/-em – whether they are perceived as adjectives or as participles by contemporary language users. The survey includes 705 respondents, all native speakers of Contemporary Bulgarian. The analysis of the results aims to confirm or reject the hypotheses proposed in advance, such as – the Present Passive Participles are preferred from the perspective of linguistic economy, as they shorten the phrase and eliminate the need for a subordinate clause.
Key words: Bulgarian participle system, Present passive participle, deverbatives, adjectives, language survey
