Abstract

As an impartial testimony from a foreigner regarding the condition of the Bulgarian literary language and the development of its stylistic system, A Gram-mar of the Bulgarian Language with Exercises and English-Bulgarian Dictionary (1859) by the American missionary Charles Morse provides a critical account of the evolution of spoken literary Bulgarian during the third quarter of the 19th cen-tury and reflects the path of the formation of Bulgarian speech etiquette. Morse’s classification of etiquette expressions for various life situations offers a vivid and detailed depiction of the Bulgarian language in its practical use.
