Abstract
The study concentrates on the manifestations of thematic, genre and linguistic peculiarities inherent in Bulgarian post-liberation journalism. The focus of attention is on the Osten (meaning a goad) newspaper (1879) – the first post-liberation satirical newspaper, whose editor was Petko Slaveykov. The major historical change itself – a newly liberated country with a new government, new manifestations of political power, a new institutional environment for communication – sets the need for new vocabulary in the language. In the present study of the newspaper, some thematic priorities caused by the new political circumstances are interpreted and the genre analogies between Slaveykov’s first humorous journalistic attempt and the Osten newspaper are discussed. Extensive empirical data has been analyzed, illustrating the dependency between language and politics.
Key words: Osten newspaper, Gayda newspaper, Petko Slaveykov, Bulgarian post-liberation journalism
