Abstract

This text aims to comment on the multi-layered image of the main character of the 1996 novel “Medea and Her Children” and the particular manifestations of her feminine instincts. The main focus is on the various visions that the author creates for her characters, making an attempt to prove the dual nature of Medea Mendes’ soul, provoked by the encounter with different cultures, characters and life’s difficulties described in the work. In the study, Lyudmila Ulitska is perceived as a postmodern artist, which leads to an attempt to explain some of the practices used to construct full-blooded, but quite enigmatic characters.

Key words: postmodern, femininity, motherhood
