Abstract
The paper studies semantic calques on the background of activation of the process of calquing in Russian and Bulgarian during the last two decades. The reasons for their appearance and the criteria for their identification are clarified. The work studies the cases of similar semantic development in Russian and Bulgarian lexical units as they are compared to their corresponding elements in English as a source of calquing.
