Abstract
The present article aims to reconceptualize the arguments for the existence of polyphony in medieval English literature. The main thesis here is that polyphony is a historically determined process rather than an accomplished fact, and that the vast majority of genres are incapable of creating the necessary conditions for its development.
Key words: Bakhtin, intertextuality, manuscript, open-endedness, polyphony
