Abstract
The essay traces the complex relations between poetry and political events during one of the most crucial and dynamic periods of Bulgarian history: the interim between the defeat of the April Uprising of 1876 and the start, as well as the unfolding, of the Russian-Turkish War of 1877. The political profile of the newspaper Stara Planina determined, to a great degree, the thematic preferences, which marked its content at the time. In parallel, it allowed the periodical to become the outlet for the first poems written by Ivan Vazov, which appeared alongside the poetic efforts of relatively or completely unknown (sometimes remaining anonymous) poets, both in Bulgarian and in French, from the Bulgarian Revival period.
Key words: the newspaper Stara Planina, April 1876, The Russian-Turkish War of 1877, the first poems of Ivan Vazov
