Abstract
The subject of study in the present work is the location of the word-formation (derivation) in the linguistic levels of the Bulgarian language. The historical review we have done shows that there are three basic lines of its interpretation: as a part of morphology; as a part of lexicology; as an independent (separate) linguistic level. In our opinion, the derivation process analyses a particular linguistic unit (the derivative) and and focuses on the ways and means of its formation , which is the reason for it to have its own place in the system of linguistic levels.
