Abstract
This paper traces the path from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to artificial intelligence via Arthur C. Clarke’s short story “Dial F for Frankenstein”, in order to shed some light on the initial Bulgarian literary reception of the myth before the novel was translated in this country. It turns out that today’s shortcut between Frankenstein and artificial intelligence was planted in the local context with the introduction of the Frankenstein complex, prior to introducing Shelley’s protagonist. The reception framework was informed by science fiction, but also by the link between industry, on the one hand, and developments in technology, on the other.
Key words: Frankenstein, Arthur C. Clarke, Hitchcock, sci-fi, translation
