Abstract

Fiction involves incorporating a wide variety of historical facts, figures, and objects from a particular era into its narrative, creating a believable backdrop for the unfolding plot. In this regard, we examined the role of historical realia (culture-specific words) as symbols using examples from one of Alexandra Marinina՚s detective novels. Examples include references to Soviet life and aesthetics, coverage of political and social themes, specific historical events, or other motifs, such as the phenomenon of samizdat. The translation process addresses the question of how much explicitness is needed for historical realia from this period (70s – 80s).
