Abstract

As a multifaceted phenomenon, expression consistently intrigues researchers and continually and inventively enriches its resources at all linguistic levels. In addition, to shock combinatorics, characterological structures, emotional clichés, and ambivalent phrases, typical participants in the temperamental expression of emotion and assessment are the expressives of understatement – interruptions, rethinking, pauses, refusal to speak. They can vary in shades, be a symptom of rage or euphoria, or be an admission of the powerlessness of words. The material confirms the attribution of expressiveness to the area of indistinct semantics, strongly tied to the characteristics, manner, and tone of communication. The article is dedicated to similar phenomena in the Bulgarian and Russian languages.

Key words: emotion, evaluation, expression, paradoxes of expression, pause, understatement, rethinking
