Abstract

The paper focuses on punctuation rules for the use of comma with subordinate clauses in English and Bulgarian, which is significantly different in many ways. Finite relative and adverbial clauses are illustrated and discussed, using authentic examples from scientific texts in the field of botany. Relative clauses, but also adverbial clauses, are of two types: restrictive and nonrestrictive, which has a direct influence on the use of comma in English and can be very confusing for Bulgarians. Therefore, it is necessary to know the logic behind the use of comma in English.
