Abstract

The paper deals with the interpretation of the story of Marie Červinková-Riegrová – Summer Dream of Life (Letní sen života) in the perspective of the perception of contemporary gender roles. The author violates the so-called family fireplace theory that draws clear distinction between women, who are in charge of the household chores, and men who are involved in social and professional life. The main character’s (the teacher’s) acceptance by society is inconsistent and the young woman remains alone.

Key words: Gender stereotypes of the 19th century, family fireplace theory, interpretation of the text through gender models
