Abstract

The paper presents the relationship between the Croatian language and the Balkan context from a student’s perspective as regards established linguistic, geographic and cultural-historical frameworks. The paper discusses the term Balkan languages and provides a statistic analysis of the awareness and skills of exchange students of Croatian as a second and a foreign language at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. A comparison is drawn with the data on the same issue, provided s by native speakers of Croatian – students of Croatian language and literature and students of other language teaching departements.
