Abstract
The article discusses the systematization of a specific segment of subordinate clauses that function as extensions to adverbs. Traditionally and consistently, these have been classified as subordinate adverbial clauses; however, this study proposes an alternative interpretation – that these clauses can be viewed as attributive. The argumentation is based on the fundamental principles underlying the grammatical system of subordinate clauses, namely: the substitution of different linguistic units within the same syntactic position and the specific characteristics of the subordinating element in the main clause.
Key words: complex sentence, subordinate clause, adverb, adverbial clause, adjunct, аttributive clause, substitution principle
