Abstract
The object of analysis in the present study are the inchoative prefixes in modern Bulgarian, which form a heterogeneous, yet clearly defined group, characterized by varying degrees of productivity and semantic specification. The main objectives are: 1) to identify and systematize the verbal prefixes with inchoative meaning; 2) to determine the degree of their productivity; 3) to outline the specific cases in which the inchoative semantics appears in combination with other meanings such as intensity, attenuativity, etc. The study confirms the high complexity in verbal prefixation, and the challenges in determining the various types of verbal action and their relation to other aspectual categories.
Key words: types of verbal action, Aktionsart, prefixes, inchoative semantics
