Abstract
This article examines the correlation between palatal and non-palatal consonants in Bulgarian, outlining the historical development and changes in the distribution of palatal consonants. The study focuses on their description in the modern Bulgarian standard language and their presence in contemporary Rhodope di-alects, including in positions absent from the standard language. An acoustic analysis of word forms with soft consonants is presented, showing that palatality is acoustically expressed through changes in the formant structure of preceding vowels. Spectrograms of actual pronunciations support the conclusions about the persistence of palatal consonants in Rhodope dialects.
